SCKY BLACK FILM STUDIES
The Film Institute of Simmons College of Kentucky offers a 6-Week Immersive Experience in Black Film Studies. This 7-credit hour experiential learning program is open to college-age emerging creatives seeking a career in the film industry.
The Black Film Institute explores the historical and contemporary evolution of Black film and media studies
for the next generation of innovative 21st-century Black storytellers in Louisville, Kentucky.

During this course, students engage in innovative experiential learning with unprecedented leadership opportunities as Black Louisville storytellers and leaders in the film industry centered in the Black cultural perspective as social justice change agents to create an original, student-led production.
The anticipated first episode and pilot of the Docuseries uproots the untold historical connection between Simmons College of Kentucky and the first 11 Black jockeys who raced in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

ONLINE COURSE (ELA Students Only)
BFI 101 (OL3) Introduction to Black Film and Media Studies (Asynchronous)
This 5-week online asynchronous course is a theoretical course exploring the historical and contemporary evolution of Black film
and media studies for the next generation of Black storytellers.
IN-PERSON COURSES (Open to All Students)
BFI 101 Introduction to Black Film and Media Studies (Tue/Thu 1:00 pm — 2:15 pm)
This course, Black Film Institute: Introduction to Black Film and Media Studies, is a theoretical course exploring
the historical and contemporary evolution of Black film and media studies for the next generation of Black storytellers.
BFI 204 Applied Audio Production for Film (Tue/Thu 2:30 pm — 3:45 pm)
During this course, students will build upon their knowledge from the Introduction to Audio Production course
to become better familiar with the tools and techniques of audio production. Students will create an original audio production at workstations in the studio. Prerequisite: BFI 203
BFI 301 Screenwriting and Script Writing (Mon/Wed 4:30 pm — 5:45 pm)
During this course, students will cultivate their understanding and skills in filmmaking from the perspective of a
creative writer. Students will explore the fundamentals of original scriptwriting and screenwriting as storytellers
for the uplift of Black narratives. Prerequisite: ENG 101
