Simmons College of Kentucky receives $60K grant from Laughing Gull Foundation

Simmons College of Kentucky has been awarded a $60,000 grant from the Laughing Gull Foundation (LGF). LGF’s Higher Education in Prisons grantmaking initiative is dedicated to reversing the trend of mass incarceration while affirming the humanity, capacity, and potential of currently incarcerated individuals.

“We are committed to expanding access to high-quality education in prisons and strengthening support for BIPOC-led initiatives. Our grantees are dedicated to breaking down barriers and ensuring equitable access to transformative educational opportunities within prison walls. Together, we’re building a future where incarcerated people can improve their lives, open new doors and pathways post-release, and remain free and thriving,” said Dr. LaTonya Penny, Chief Executive of the Laughing Gull Foundation.

Simmons College of Kentucky Celebrates Dr. Rick W. Smith, Sr.’s Transition to President of Dallas College Northlake

Simmons College of Kentucky announces the transition of Dr. Rick W. Smith, Sr., Senior Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Administrative Projects, as he accepts the role of President at Dallas College Northlake in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Smith joined Simmons College’s leadership team in December 2023 and has made a lasting impact on the institution through his leadership, vision, and commitment to advancing the college’s mission.
During his tenure, Dr. Smith oversaw fundraising efforts, including laying the foundation for a significant and transformative capital campaign to be announced in 2025. He also played a key role in establishing Simmons College’s first foundation, a milestone that will support the long-term sustainability of the institution.
Simmons College President, Dr. Kevin W. Cosby, praised Dr. Smith’s contributions and his dedication to elevating Simmons saying, “Dr. Rick Smith brought a strategic focus and tireless energy to Simmons College of Kentucky. His efforts in institutional advancement have helped to set the stage for unprecedented growth and opportunity for our students, faculty, and the entire community. While we will miss his leadership, we are excited for everything he will accomplish at Dallas College Northlake with the same passion and excellence.”

Simmons Senior Tech Hub celebrates first Graduation

Simmons College of Kentucky, in partnership with ElderServe, held the Simmons Senior Tech Hub Fall Celebration on November 15, 2024, at the College’s Administration and Library Building in Louisville. The event celebrated the achievements of the six senior citizens who graduated from the Fall 2024 Senior Tech Hub program and highlighted the impact of the digital literacy workshops led by Simmons Technology Scholars, who were awarded prestigious scholarships. Launched in August 2024, the program offered free, curriculum-based workshops to senior citizens, covering topics such as online safety, mobile device navigation, accessing government websites, and using technology for healthcare. The bi-weekly sessions empowered seniors to bridge the digital divide and confidently use technology in their daily lives.

The celebration underscored Simmons College’s commitment to digital inclusion and lifelong learning for Louisville’s senior community. “Every session with the senior citizens at ElderServe was electrifying,” said Justin Damis, a Simmons sophomore and Technology Scholar. “The ElderServe guests are amazing to work with and exude wisdom, confidence, and positivity towards technology!” The event highlighted the ongoing partnership between Simmons College and ElderServe in their shared mission to foster digital literacy and empower seniors in the community.

Molina Health Announces $20K Gift to Simmons College of Kentucky to fund Scholarships

Simmons College of Kentucky announced a major investment in healthcare education on Monday, November 11th. We revealed a $20,000 donation from the Molina Healthcare Charitable Foundation, which will support our Master of Medical Science program. The funds will provide scholarships to students in need, helping to close gaps in financial support and access to higher education.

“We need to lean on our community partners to help fill the gaps and ensure that students who are eager for education and new opportunities can access them,” said Ryan Sadler, president of Passport by Molina Healthcare. “It’s our responsibility to make that happen.” The Master of Medical Science program, now in its first year, is designed to prepare students for careers in healthcare.

Simmons College of Kentucky launches Race, Religion, and Public Policy Symposium

The Race, Religion, and Public Policy Symposium will examine the influence of this sociopolitical movement on the upcoming election through various events. Simmons College of Kentucky President Dr. Kevin W. Cosby has published an op-ed titled “HBCUs are imperative to Black progress; Financial support from liberal allies is needed”. Dr. Cosby lays out the need for increased funding for HBCUs as to help lift Black Americans economically.
