Specializations in General Studies
Enhance your General Studies degree by selecting a 9-hour elective track in a specialized area.
This specialization immerses students in the dynamic world of Black film and media, equipping them with the skills to become powerful storytellers and creators. Through hands-on production experiences and deep engagement with Black cultural representation in film and television, students will gain the tools to shape the future of the industry. Graduates will be prepared to step into creative roles in both film and television, using their voices to tell authentic, impactful stories.

BFI 101 | Introduction to Black Film and Media Studies | 3 Credits
This course explores the historical and contemporary evolution of Black film and media studies for the next generation of Black storytellers. Students will engage in interactive lectures, readings, discussions, and assignments to investigate the strategies of Black filmmakers and producers in presenting the Black cultural experience to the world. Topics include script writing, research, and the roles and responsibilities of industry professionals in film and television.
Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of FRE 100 with a grade of “C” or better.
BFI 201 | Advanced Black Film and Media Studies | 3 Credits
Building upon the foundation of BFI 101, this course offers students an experiential learning opportunity by applying their knowledge of Black film and media studies to practical scenarios. Students will explore the key phases of film and television production—pre-production, production, and post-production—while familiarizing themselves with the industry’s technical terminology and various roles. The course culminates in a student-led project, allowing students to direct, produce, and collaborate with industry professionals.

BFI 304 | Film and Video Editing | 3 Credits
This course introduces students to a variety of video editing programs and software used in the film and television industry. Students will learn key terminology and editing tools to develop their skills in film and video editing, ultimately working towards an original, student-led project. Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of BFI 101 with a grade of “C” or better.
This specialization provides students with a solid understanding of the science behind human behavior, focusing on the biological, social, and research aspects of psychology. Students will explore the interaction between the brain and behavior, develop essential research skills, and gain a deep understanding of psychological principles. The program prepares students for advanced studies in psychology or careers that require a strong foundation in behavioral science.

This course explores the relationship between the Central Nervous System and behavior, providing a biopsychological perspective on human actions. Students will learn about the dynamic interaction between biology and behavior, using scientific methods to understand the whole person.

PSY 201 | Social Science Statistics | 3 Credits
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of statistical reasoning in the social sciences, including descriptive statistics, probability theory, and statistical inference. Students will also learn to use SPSS software for statistical analysis.

PSY 202 | Social Science Research Methods | 3 Credits
This course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to research methods in psychology and related fields. Students will learn to evaluate both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and critically assess scientific claims in the media and literature.

The Literary Arts specialization immerses students in the rich history and evolution of literature, with a focus on diverse cultural narratives. Through a deep exploration of classic and contemporary works, students will enhance their critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills while developing a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling. ENG 201 | Introduction to American Literature | 3 Credits

ENG 203 | African American Literature | 3 Credits
