Community is the Key to Greatness
Simmons College of Kentucky proudly presents the 2025 Race To Greatness event—our annual celebration of the Black Jockeys of the Kentucky Derby—on April 6th. This year, we are honored to also commemorate the 20th Presidential Anniversary of Dr. Kevin W. Cosby as the 13th President of Simmons College. Join us at the historic Churchill Downs inside Millionaire’s Row for an unforgettable evening of history, excellence, and legacy.
Black jockeys and horsemen dominated the sport of Thoroughbred racing, from the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 through 1903, right before the Jim Crow era pushed them out. In fact, from the inaugural Kentucky Derby in 1875, Black jockeys dominated the sport, winning over half of the first 28 Derbys. Coincidentally, it was also during this same era that Simmons University was founded. Through that synergy, the Louisville community proudly celebrates the history of Black jockeys and Simmons together by ensuring the success of future students as they begin their own Race to Greatness.
