Simmons College of Kentucky and collaborating partners is excited to celebrate Week of the Young Child, an annual event created by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to recognize the importance of early learning and the role families, educators, and communities play in supporting young children. This week is a time to highlight the critical foundation built during a child’s earliest years and to advocate for quality early childhood education. This event is brought to you by Department of Early Childhood in the School of Education.
We invite you to join us for a week of engaging activities, both virtual and in-person, designed to inspire, educate, and uplift young children and their families.

Family Friday
The last of the WOYC celebration was planned as a day of fun activities for children and their parents. The early childhood students – Breasi, Curtise, Tailyia, and Trena wrote and presented Freddy and Daisey’s Adventures puppet show. It was so entertaining! The day also included a talk about “Understanding Childhood Trauma” which has become so prevalent in our communities, facilitated by Dr. Marleeta Harris from Skillz4Life. Resource tables were provided by Child Care Aware and National Center for Families Learning.

Music Monday
The Week of the Young Child (WOYC) is time to set aside a week to bring focus on the needs of young children, their families and communities and those who care for them. The celebration began with Music Monday with none other than the talented, gifted LeLe Elington Johnson playing the violin.
She is graduating with a BS degree in Music and will be the first violinist to graduate from SCKY!
Tasty Tuesday
It is so important that children eat healthy food and snacks. On Tasty Tuesday we had demonstrations of healthy snacks that children can make at home as well as in the classroom.
Work Together Wednesday
We bought together a phenomenal, powerful group of early childhood advocates to talk about “Saving Our Children: The Importance of Parents Advocating for Their Children.” The panelists represented the following programs and organizations and were also our WOYC partners: Defend the Early Years; Metro United Way; National Center for Families Learning;
Skills4Life; and Thrive by Five.
Artsy Thursday
The art of storytelling was the theme for Artsy Thursday. Preston the Preschooler as told by Marianna was read. In the story, Preston began his morning crying because he wanted to stay with his mom. His teacher, Senorita Garcia, comforted him. Once Preston got engaged in the day’s fun and activities, he was fine. He even told his mom, when she picked him up, that he had a “good” day at preschool! Dr. B (Bridges) is the author and is also director of early childhood education at SCKY.
