A Night at Churchill Downs, A Century in the Making
On a spring evening at the historic Churchill Downs, amid the energy of the annual Race To Greatness fundraiser, Simmons College of Kentucky experienced a moment that will echo through generations.
April 6, 2025, marked not just a date on the calendar—it marked a homecoming. In a powerful and emotional ceremony, Simmons celebrated the long-awaited return of its institutional archives—historical treasures that had been housed at the University of Louisville for over half a century.

Unearthed Legacy: What the Archives Hold
These archives—once thought lost to time—tell the story of Black excellence, resilience, and faith-driven education in Kentucky. Originally transferred to UofL in 1974, the collection includes rare editions of Simmonola magazine, historic records from the General Association of Baptists in Kentucky, and countless photos, papers, and artifacts reflecting Simmons’ academic, religious, and athletic legacies.
As representatives from the University of Louisville formally presented Dr. Kevin W. Cosby with these priceless materials, a rush of reverence settled over the room. It was more than a transfer—it was a reckoning, a restoration and reaffirmation of Simmons’ rightful place in the historical narrative of Black higher education.
“This is more than just paper and photographs. This is the soul of Simmons. This is who we are, and who we’ve always been.”
The Champions Behind the Comeback
The journey to reclaim these archives was not accidental—it was the result of tireless leadership and advocacy. Dr. Ken Jobst, Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness; Mrs. Kathy Washington, Executive Director of Title III Funded Programs; and Dr. Chad White, Chair of the Religious Studies Department, led the initiative with vision and tenacity. Their dedication ensured that Simmons’ story would no longer be stored away—it would be shared, celebrated, and cherished.
The event also highlighted the growing spirit of collaboration between Simmons and UofL, pointing toward a new era of a thriving partnership rooted in justice, equity, and historical accountability.
This Is Legacy Work
Now, as the college prepares for the physical return of the archives and the unveiling of a new digital archive on its website, the Simmons community stands in unity and pride. Students, alumni, faculty, and friends know: this is a defining chapter. One that not only connects them to the past but inspires the future.
Because when a people’s story is returned to their hands, it becomes more than memory—it becomes legacy. Our history has come home. And with it, a renewed commitment to tell it boldly.
We invite all to join us in honoring this monumental milestone. View the digital archive:
