Community is the Key to Greatness
Simmons College of Kentucky proudly presents the 2026 Race To Greatness event—our annual celebration of the Black Jockeys of the Kentucky Derby—on April 12. Join us at the historic Kentucky Derby Museum for an unforgettable evening of history, excellence, and legacy.
This year’s event will present a special salute to Shirley Mae Beard, who celebrated Black jockey history in the 1980’s through A Salute to the Black Jockeys event in Smoketown. Ms. Beard has a scholarship at Simmons College of Kentucky that honors her work on promoting this great black history. Along with celebrating this great history with Derby food, fun, vendor booths, and jazz music, we will host an after party featuring a special musical guest.
Black Jockeys
Black jockeys and horsemen dominated the sport of Thoroughbred racing, from the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 through 1903, right before the Jim Crow era pushed them out. In fact, from the inaugural Kentucky Derby in 1875, Black jockeys dominated the sport, winning over half of the first 28 Derbys. Coincidentally, it was also during this same era that Simmons University was founded. Through that synergy, the Louisville community proudly celebrates the history of Black jockeys and Simmons together by ensuring the success of future students as they begin their own Race to Greatness.
