Experiential Learning Approach
Throughout the course, students engage in innovative experiential learning, gaining unprecedented leadership opportunities as Black Louisville storytellers. The program emphasizes a Black cultural perspective, empowering participants to become social justice change agents through their creative endeavors. This immersive experience culminates in the creation of original, student-led productions.
Industry Partnerships
The Black Film Institute has established strategic partnerships with leading Louisville film organizations to provide students with real-world industry experience and networking opportunities:
Collaborating with KBFA provides students direct access to Louisville’s vibrant community of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color filmmakers, offering mentorship opportunities, industry networking, and collaborative project development.
Partnership with 502 Film connects students to Louisville’s broader film community, providing access to professional equipment, location scouting resources, and industry professionals who serve as guest instructors and project mentors.
Our collaboration with Metro TV Louisville offers students hands-on experience in broadcast media production, access to professional broadcasting equipment, and opportunities to showcase student work through Louisville’s public access television platform.
Provides professional studio facilities, advanced production equipment, and industry-standard recording environments for hands-on training in commercial video production and multimedia content creation.
Program Achievements
The anticipated first episode and pilot of our signature docuseries premiered in 2023, unearthing the untold historical connection between Simmons College of Kentucky and the first 11 Black jockeys who raced in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
This groundbreaking project exemplifies our commitment to uncovering and preserving Black history through cinematic storytelling.

Our vision is to become a globally recognized hub for Black film education, creation, and innovation, producing the next generation of influential filmmakers who will lead the industry into a more diverse and inclusive future.
The Film and Media studies represents more than an educational program—it is a transformative force in Louisville’s cultural landscape, dedicated to ensuring that Black and diverse stories are told with authenticity, creativity, and power.
