LOUISVILLE, KY (May 5, 2026) – Simmons College of Kentucky will celebrate its 147th Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen Baptist Church (1018 S 15th Street, Louisville, KY 40210). This year marks the institution’s largest graduating class with 110-degree candidates across associate, bachelor’s, and graduate degree programs.
Dr. Cornel West, Commencement Speaker
The ceremony will honor graduates alongside nationally recognized leaders whose work has shaped communities and advanced scholarship. Dr. Cornel West will serve as commencement speaker and will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. A renowned philosopher, theologian, and public intellectual, Dr. West is a professor at Union Theological Seminary and former faculty member at Harvard and Princeton, widely known for his work on race, justice, and democracy.
President Kevin W. Cosby, Ph.D., D.Min., will deliver remarks and recognize members of the 2026 graduating class, including KaNetha Mack, a graduate who has been accepted into the University of Kentucky’s Master of Public Administration program and selected as a recipient of the prestigious Lymon T. Johnson Fellowship for the 2026–2027 academic year.
Honorary degrees, among the College’s highest distinctions, will be conferred upon individuals whose exceptional leadership, service, and contributions have made a lasting impact on our community and the nation. Recipients include:
Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Recipients
Congressman Jonathan Jackson
The son of the late Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., and the U.S. Congressman representing Illinois’ First Congressional District. A lifelong advocate for civil rights and social justice, Jackson has championed legislation on reparations, education equity, and criminal justice reform. His leadership spans national and international human rights efforts, as well as community advocacy in education and economic equity.
Christina Lee Brown
A member of the Brown-Forman family, philanthropist, and environmental leader. Her work has focused on a New Vision of Health that connects human well-being to environmental, cultural, and community health. She has led major initiatives including the Center for Interfaith Relations, the Festival of Faiths, and the Envirome Institute, advancing global conversations on sustainability and public health.
Dr. Cornel West
Renowned philosopher, theologian, and public intellectual; professor at Union Theological Seminary and former faculty member at Harvard and Princeton. A leading voice on race, democracy, and justice, he is the author of Race Matters and numerous other influential works, continuing to shape national dialogue through scholarship and public engagement.
Juanita Landers White
Investigative historian whose research has documented the history of African Americans in Kentucky. She uncovered the historical connection between Simmons College, Churchill Downs, and the Churchill family, including the origins of the College’s campus. Her work has been featured in statewide publications, historical societies, and PBS programming.
Honorary Doctor of Divinity Recipient
Reverend Darwan T. Lazard
Educator, pastor, and public servant with more than 30 years in education. He has served as Superintendent of Schools for Evangeline Parish and pastor of Ninth Missionary Baptist Church. His leadership reflects a strong commitment to faith, academic excellence, and community impact, along with national roles in Baptist organizations.
