A Promising New Era
On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Simmons College of Kentucky proudly announced DeJuan Wheat as the new head coach of its men’s basketball team.
Simmons is proud to honor its rich basketball legacy while ushering in a new era under Coach Wheat’s leadership. With his passion, experience, and strong Louisville roots, the “Wheat Era” promises to be an exciting chapter for Simmons men’s basketball.
Hall of Fame Experience
A Louisville native and one of the most accomplished players in University of Louisville basketball history, Wheat brings a wealth of experience and a legacy of excellence to Simmons. During his college career, he ranked second all-time in points (2,183) and three-pointers made (323), and fifth in assists (498). In 1997, he led the Cardinals to an Elite Eight appearance and became the first player in NCAA Division I history to record at least 2,000 points, 450 assists, 300 three-pointers, and 200 steals. He was later inducted into the University of Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame.
Following his collegiate success, Wheat was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1997 and played in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Vancouver Grizzlies. His professional journey also included a successful international basketball career before transitioning into coaching, with roles at Valley High School (Louisville, KY) and Indiana University Southeast. During the press conference, both Coach Wheat and Simmons College Athletic Director Jerry Eaves expressed deep appreciation for outgoing Head Coach Tony Branch, recognizing his years of dedication, leadership, and integrity.
