Construction has officially begun on a major revitalization of the West Kentucky Street corridor, bringing a community-driven vision to life. Stretching from 4th Street to 8th Street, the project will enhance the appearance, traffic flow, and safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists — in an area that includes key institutions like Simmons College of Kentucky.
A Vision Shaped by the Community

The corridor plan is the result of feedback from neighborhood residents, businesses, churches, and colleges, including Simmons. Community members voiced strong support for transforming West Kentucky Street into a two-way road, improving pedestrian crossings at 7th and 5th Streets, creating safer bike access, slowing traffic, and building a greener, tree-lined streetscape.
“This corridor is an artery that links the hearts of the California and Old Louisville neighborhoods together — connecting residents, churches, businesses, and colleges like Simmons and Spalding University,” said Jennifer Caummisar-Kern, Director of Louisville Metro Public Works. “These plans are shaped by the voices of those who live, work, learn, and worship here.”
Project Highlights
- Conversion of West Kentucky Street into a two-way street from 8th to 5th Street, with updated striping and signage.
- Addition of a bike lane between 7th and 5th Streets.
- Improved pedestrian crossings at 7th and 5th Streets.
- New four-way stops at the 5th and 6th Street intersections.
- Expanded tree canopy along the corridor.
- Upgrades to the TARC bus stop at 7th Street.
- New and improved sidewalks and curbs.
Supporting Growth Around Simmons
“These improvements will make a real difference for the Simmons College community and our neighbors,” Kern said. “Easing traffic flow, boosting visibility for local businesses and institutions, and making walking, biking, and driving safer will support the growth and vitality of this entire area.”

The West Kentucky Street corridor serves as a crucial connector to important destinations including Simmons College of Kentucky, Spalding University, Ben Washer Park, and the Louisville Memorial Auditorium.
Project Timeline and Impact
More than $1 million is being invested into this phase of the project. Construction will require periodic closures of sections of West Kentucky Street; commuters are encouraged to follow posted detour signs, plan ahead, and allow extra travel time. Residents will continue to have access to their properties during the project.
Construction is expected to be completed by August 1, 2025.
