Simmons College of Kentucky is proud to celebrate the achievements of two standout students who are answering the call to educate and empower the next generation.

Will Pennebaker (Class of 2024) was honored this week at the Muhammad Ali Center as one of 41 students to complete the Louisville Teacher Residency (LTR) program. After wrapping up his final two courses this summer, he will officially earn his Master of Education degree from the University of Louisville this fall. Will will serve in the classroom as a Special Education teacher, holding a certification in Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD). Reflecting on his journey, Will shared, “Thank you to my Alma Mater, Simmons College of Kentucky, for helping me find my voice and purpose. Thank you, Dr. Seay—it was your class where I found out about the LTR program. Thank you, Dr. Robinson, for seeing something in me that I didn’t see in myself.”

Rachel Calhoun (Class of 2025) has been accepted into the prestigious Teach For America Corps and will begin her training this month in Indianapolis, Indiana. After already completing interviews with an Indianapolis school, she is expected to begin teaching this fall, with full teacher certification anticipated within two years. Rachel was introduced to Teach For America during the 2024 NBA HBCU Classic, where she attended as a guest of the Indianapolis TFA program. Teach For America corps members receive full salaries from their school districts, along with vacation, health benefits, and transitional stipends to support relocation and summer training.
We are proud of Will and Rachel for continuing the Simmons legacy of leadership, purpose, and service in the field of education.
