HELPING TO FUND THE JOURNEY

S.T.E.P. Minority

Teacher Scholarship

The S.T.E.P. Minority Teacher Scholarship helps candidates of color, many of whom are first-generation college-goers, get to and through college to become certified teachers. Scholars are awarded scholarships based on demonstrated need.

What is the S.T.E.P. Minority Teacher Scholarship?

The S.T.E.P. Minority Teacher Scholarship is a need-based “gap” award of $200 to $2,500 for minority teacher candidates enrolled full-time in our associate or bachelor’s teacher education program. Candidates will submit an S.T.E.P. Minority Teacher Scholarship Application. We look at a student’s Expected Family Contribution (as determined by the FAFSA), their college financial aid package total, and Simmons’s Cost of Attendance. Candidates can reapply each year up to 5 years from first eligibility if the candidate maintains a minimum 2.75 GPA. Costs we consider are tuition, housing, meal plan, and mandatory fees.

How is the scholarship determined?

We calculate the gap between your COSTS and your SUPPORT.

COSTS we consider:

· Tuition

· Mandatory fees

· Housing (college housing only)

· Meal plan (full plans for college-housed students, limited plans for commuting from home students)

SUPPORT we consider:

· Financial aid package provided by Simmons, including college scholarships, state and federal grants, and federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans. We don't include your Work-Study allocation.

· Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from your Student Aid Report (SAR) from your FAFSA

· Non-university scholarships (scholarships not included in your college’s financial aid package)
